Third century thinkers to renew the West philosophical basis

  • 05/15/2018 - by Iván López Casanova

INTRODUCTION

In the book thinkers of the twentieth century, a philosophy of hope for the XXI century is exposed, in a manner accessible to a cult audience, some traces of the philosophy of the great thinkers of the twentieth century Simone Weil, María Zambrano, Edith Stein, Hannah Arendt. But it is a fruitful approach, which produces the double intention that motivates his writing: apply this knowledge to understanding the current deep crisis of Western thought, and propose ethical contributions of these thinkers to remedy it.

There are excellent and numerous studies on the intellectuals reviewed, but this attempt to apply ethics to cultural news is very original. Why not take the common points of these philosophers as references, as a ground on which to support our moral world to strengthen the roots of our Western culture?

In addition, the common features in the thinking of the intellectual proposals will serve as a counterweight against the background of hope disenchanted and sceptical, dominant in many intellectual and artistic fields, in which camper a strong disperse relativism of Western cultural foundations. Consequently, the philosophical background of these thinkers will provide a key to exit the labyrinth of hopelessness in which scepticism has plunged us. Because our culture disintegrates relativism that draws on the same intellectual problems-Modernity, now in its last epígone disenchanted reason weak, they faced, understood and philosophically solved the authors mentioned.

To highlight the importance of these philosophical contributions superfluous exposure of the merits of these intellectual women in the field of twentieth-century thought: Simone Weil, María Zambrano, Edith Stein and Hannah Arendt are eminent thinkers of the century, and it does not necessarily insist on it.

INTELLECTUAL CHARACTERISTICS COMMON TO THE GREAT THINKERS OF THE 20TH CENTURY

1. BIOGRAPHICAL BREAKDOWN AND ANTHROPOLOGY OF HOPE

How to understand that these great women, whose lives were very hard, gave us a thought pregnant with hope, full of confidence in the human being? (Note that many male philosophers, in that same time and with a quiet existence, offered a hopeless and obscure thought).

In fact, except María Zambrano, all were affected by their Jewish origin during the Second World War. Edith Stein left Germany to live in Holland, but there it was located by the Gestapo and taken to the concentration camp in which she will lose her life. Simone Weil suffered multiple hardships until she was able to leave France, her native country, and go to the United States; from there she returned to England, where she died with thirty-six, very physically deteriorated. Also, Hannah Arendt had to move away from her native Germany to live a few years in France. There she was interned in a prison camp for Jews and after many vicissitudes and humiliations – “they almost never hit us,” she wrote – she was able to embark in Lisbon and arrives in New York in 1941. She will reside in the United States until the end of her days

María Zambrano lived in the Spain of the Civil War. During this contest, she took sides with the government of the Republic and participated directly in activities in favour of the Republican cause in the intellectual field and the promotion of culture. At the end she had to leave Spain, crossing the Spanish-French border on foot with her mother and sister, in hard emotional and physical circumstances. She went to Mexico, Cuba and other Latin American and European countries later, and she was always considered an exiled person. She returned to Spain at eighty years of age.

But whoever she suffered so much as to understand the passive dimension of the person in depth and perceived clearly that the person should receive the hospitality of others – and, therefore, even she offered her own. Our thoughts captured the vulnerability of the human being, the need to feel loved for others to feel completed and the need to be understood. Consequently, they developed a luminous, hopeful philosophy; an anthropology of the donation and an ethic of the linked person; a thought that emphasizes the need to interweave with others to reach vital fullness.

2. THE VOICE OF THE HEART

This term expresses well the search for new categories of thought with which to undertake the acute commotion of the culture of its time avoiding irrationalism and also overcoming the excessive logical-deductive approach of the different historical philosophical systems. This explains why the philosophical categories which they attack their intellectual thoughts are not rigid; that they do not build systems of thought where everything is set, as if the human being were an exact mechanism and their instructions could be known; that the philosophical intuitions they offer are open to the possibility of being added to the contributions of other intellectuals.

As it shows, the thought of Simone Weil for whom the interior of the heart is the key where full existence is won or lost. In this way, if a radical determination is made towards the truth, good and beauty, the miracle of openness to the Light – the Grace – and, with it, the true life and the profound knowledge that emerges. Without this, the human being is the slave of the gravity, of the need that pushes his life, and is unable to detect the pain of the one humiliated, of the one, vanquished, of the one that is a slave. We would live floating in an unreal world, thinking that we are the absolute actors of our own life, the winners. But all this will only be until the fortune slaps his face and reaches the absurd, to a life that, now is understood as a humiliation, and as to a resentful answer, surely sceptical.

Weil offers, therefore, concepts and categories that comprise a flexible mosaic drawn by intuitions, born of the experiences that she makes explicit; a thought in which, precisely, the sincerity of her exhibition enhances her strength and her truth. That is why we find her plausible, real, closer. She is not, therefore, an intellectual universe resulting from the construction of a rational system that is accessed by cold logical steps, achieving a structure to deduce a posteriori some reasoned conclusions. And for that reason, we are vaccinated against irrationalism or against the sceptical absence of truth.

OPEN TO TRANSCENDENCE

Miguel de Unamuno claimed that there was a generation that could live intellectually at the nineteenth-century positivism because, educated in the Christian faith, hiding the unconscious support. But that the generation formed only with categories of positivism would return with force to seek “the hidden source that his parents left”. And this is how it is fulfilled in the lives of these intellectual women. I will show it with some brush strokes of the life of Stein and Weil.

The Jewish Edith Stein will be described as an atheist in her first youth and, although she did not boast of it and accompanied her mother to the door of the synagogue, she was not educated in a deep religiosity. But, as she will explain years later, for years her search for the truth turned out to convert in a prayer because of this intellectual faith and philosophy are strengthened. As known, after her intellectual approach to the phenomenology of religious experience, she will receive baptism in the Catholic Church and enter a monastery as a cloistered nun. Finally, because of her Jewish condition, she was arrested and transferred to Auschwitz, where she died in a gas chamber.

Simone Weil was born also into a Jewish family without any religious practice. In her first youth, she fought in some labour movements and she was known as the red virgin. Later, she enlisted as a volunteer in the anarchist side of the Spanish Civil War, that was a deeply anti-religious faction. But after this, Weil agreed to the mystery of the supernatural through an unexpected mystical experience that gave birth to her desire to belong to the Catholic Church, to be baptized before she died. From that moment, in her philosophical reflection, the transcendent appeared as a fundamental piece to understand the human being.

DISINTERÉS BY THE FEMINIST CURRENTS AND THE SEXUAL REVOLUTION

Indeed, it appears, as a note shared by these thinkers, a striking disregard for feminist currents, motivated by the anthropological weakness that led these theoretical developments in the course of the twentieth century. In fact, María Zambrano and Hannah Arendt, who knew the mid-century feminist years and their underlying thesis -the theoretical basis of the so-called sexual revolution-, expressed their strong disagreement towards those positions that rejected the feminine role of a wife and a mother.

In this way, although all the thinkers had to fight against the misogyny and machismo that dominated in the culture of their time, they knew how to be independent before the intellectual fashions and feminist ideological topics. As a curious example, all of them -with the exception of Edith Stein-, were heavy smokers until the end of their lives, breaking with the expected of the woman to be a woman. In short, they struggled against misogyny without abandoning femininity, and without equating it with masculinity in strange and confusing hodge-podge, against the grain of feminist postulates.

In the presentation of the book The adventure of Being a Woman, in which a selection of Zambrano’s texts meet Ortega Muñoz, director of María Zambrano Foundation, clarified that she wanted “to show that women are equal to others men, and it is not about overcoming it or imitating it, but about complementing it, because women do not come to occupy the role of a man, but have to be with the man as a compliment “. It is obvious that this approach cancels any possibility of including her thought in feminist categories or in gender ideologies.

Also, in a famous interview for the German television, made by Günter Gaus in 1964, Hannah Arendt affirmed, with a point of irony before the camera: “I have always been of the opinion that there are certain occupations that are not for women. When a woman starts giving orders, things do not look good she said; she should not get to such positions if she cares to remain feminine. I do not know if in this I have or not a reason. For my part, I have been guided in some many ways by that criterion, more or less unconsciously, or better, more or less consciously. Personally, the problem has not affected me. Look, I’ve always done what I wanted … without telling me: a woman does now exactly what men usually do, it has never been my problem”. After these affirmations, it will not be surprising if one of her biographers, Laura Adler, pronounced categorically: «Hannah was never a feminist».

CONCLUSIONS

The great thinkers of the twentieth century offer an anthropology of the person in relation and a flexible thought to overcome skepticism; likewise, they maintain not only an openness to horizontal transcendence towards others but also vertical towards the Christian roots of the West; they also postulate a joint understanding of radical equality and the wonderful difference between the male and female person. Consequently, their contributions are very fruitful to correct the deteriorated cultural course of Western thought emerged from the postmodern cultural relativism in which nothing is firm and everything is the same.

All their intellectual contributions allow us to understand the West as a space of freedom in which each person can follow their own path and their personal way of life, sharing it with those who think differently. A culture of encounter in which each one offers its sincere experience to build the democratic base is necessary for joyful coexistence.

The intellectual contributions of Simone Weil, María Zambrano, Edith Stein and Hannah Arendt, therefore, are very valuable to recover the identity of Western culture. Perhaps a lot of this task is summarized in providing a philosophical and anthropological nucleus to address the deep ethical crisis of the present time because that is the main threat to coexistence in the current time.
